Impact of Behavioural Intervention on functioning of Children with ASD and their Parents

It has been seen that Neuro developmental Disorders like ASD in children strongly affect the family. The behavioural issues associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder have a great impact on functioning of their parents. As a consequence they developed some dysfunction in various aspects of performance in their life. The present paper investigated the role of behavioural intervention on the maladaptive behaviour of children with ASD and its effect on enhancing the functioning of their parents. Total of 15 children diagnosed with moderate level of ASD with associated behavioural issues were selected. They were given continuous behavioural management intervention in one to one session for 6 months regularly (5 days a week). Consequently after 120 therapy sessions the children developed some adaptive behaviour and showed improvements from associated behavioural issues. It was assessed using ISAA, a rating scale for Autism. The parents of these children both fathers (15) and mothers (15) were evaluated on Dysfunctional Analysis Questionnaire. The result shows significant changes in the maladaptive behaviour of the children with ASD in the areas of social, emotional, communication, behaviour, sensitivity and cognitive functioning. The results also showed that the functioning of the parents improved in social, vocational, personal, family and cognitive areas of functioning. They come out with the chaos related to care giver burden as their child become more adaptive and free from preoccupied behavioural issues. So it can be concluded that the Behavioural intervention techniques can be used as an effective tool in both children with ASD and their parents.
